Mysore to Coorg Road Trip: Distance, Route, What to See & How to Book a Cab

Mysore to Coorg Road Trip

The Mysore to Coorg distance is about 120 km via NH 275 and takes roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours by cab. It’s one of Karnataka’s most rewarding drives—coffee plantations, ghat roads, mist, and green hills the whole way. Here’s everything you need before you go.

The Route That Actually Makes Sense

There’s really one route most people take and for good reason:

Mysore → Hunsur → Kushalnagar → Madikeri (Coorg)

Via NH 275. Well-maintained, clearly marked, and genuinely beautiful once you cross Kushalnagar and start climbing into the hills.

A few things worth knowing:
  • The stretch between Kushalnagar and Madikeri is where the road gets winding, not difficult but worth knowing if anyone in the car gets carsick easily.
  • Fuel up in Mysore or Kushalnagar; stations get sparse after that.
  • The drive through coffee estates right before Madikeri is something else entirely—slow down and take it in.

How Long Does It Actually Take

Starting Point Distance Drive Time
Mysore City Center ~120 km 2.5 to 3.5 hours
Mysore Railway Station ~122 km 2.5 to 3.5 hours
Mysore Airport ~130 km 3 to 4 hours

These are realistic timings. Add 30 minutes during weekends and peak season when the ghat section gets busier.

What to See on the Way

Don’t just drive straight through; a couple of stops make the journey part of the trip:

  • Nagarhole National Park

If you take a slight detour via Nagarhole, you’re driving through one of Karnataka’s best wildlife reserves. In morning drives especially, elephant and deer sightings are common. Not on the main NH 275 route but worth it if you have time.

  • Kushalnagar and Bylakuppe

Kushalnagar is a good chai and snack stop. Just 5 km off the main road is Bylakuppe, home to the Namdroling Monastery, also called the Golden Temple. One of the largest Tibetan settlements in India. Completely unexpected and genuinely worth 45 minutes.

  • Harangi Dam

A short detour before you reach Madikeri. Quiet, scenic, not crowded. Good stop if you want to stretch your legs before hitting the city.

What to See in Coorg

Once you arrive, here’s what’s worth your time:

  • Raja’s Seat: Best at sunset. Panoramic valley views right in the middle of Madikeri town.
  • Abbey Falls: Walk through coffee and spice plants to get there. The sound hits before you see it.
  • Madikeri Fort: A 17th-century fort with a small museum inside. Right in town, easy stop.
  • Talacauvery: The sacred source of the Cauvery River. Calm, forested, and completely different from everything else in Coorg.
  • Dubare Elephant Camp: On the Cauvery riverbank. Families especially love this one.
  • Coffee Plantation Walk: Coorg coffee bought at the source tastes nothing like what you get in the city. Pick up a bag before you leave.

FAQs

Is the Mysore to Coorg road trip suitable for first-time travelers?

Very much so. NH 275 is well-maintained and clearly marked. The only section that needs a bit of attention is the ghat stretch near Madikeri, not difficult but winding. An experienced driver handles it without any issue.

Can we do Mysore to Coorg as a one-day trip?

You can, but it’s tight. The drive is 2.5 to 3.5 hours each way, which leaves limited time to actually see anything. A minimum two-day trip lets you cover Coorg properly without rushing every stop.

What vehicle works best for a group of 5 with luggage?

Innova is the right call. It’s comfortable for 5 people, handles the ghat road well, and has enough boot space that nobody is sitting with bags on their lap for three hours.

Are there any tolls on the Mysore to Coorg route?

Yes, there are toll booths on NH 275. Confirm with Mysore Travelo at the time of booking whether tolls are included in your quoted fare or charged separately.

How early should we leave Mysore for a comfortable trip?

An early morning start—around 6 to 7 AM—is ideal. You avoid Mysore city traffic, reach Coorg by mid-morning, and have the full day ahead of you.
