Mysore to Ooty by Cab: Complete Travel Guide (Route, Stops, Tips)

Mysore to Ooty by Cab

The Mysore to Ooty distance is around 125 km and takes about 3.5 to 4 hours by cab depending on which route you take. A private cab like Mysore to Ooty Cab service is the most comfortable way to do this trip—you get to stop at Bandipur, catch the Mudumalai forest stretch, and arrive in Ooty without any connection stress.

Here’s everything worth knowing before you go.

The Two Routes from Mysore to Ooty

Route 1. Via Bandipur and Mudumalai (Most Popular)

Mysore → Gundlupet → Bandipur National Park → Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary → Ooty

This is the route most people take and for good reason. You’re driving through two of South India’s best wildlife reserves back to back. Elephant sightings on this stretch are genuinely common, especially early morning. The forest drive alone makes the journey worth it.

One thing to keep in mind: like Bandipur, Mudumalai also has a night closure for vehicles. Plan your drive so you’re through both forests before 9 PM.

Route 2. Via Gudalur

Slightly longer but smoother road. A good option if you’re traveling with elderly passengers or anyone who finds the forest ghat sections uncomfortable.

Distance and Time at a Glance

Route Distance Drive Time
Via Bandipur & Mudumalai ~125 km 3.5 to 4 hours
Via Gudalur ~140 km 4 to 4.5 hours

Both routes are manageable in a single morning if you leave Mysore by 6 or 7 AM.

Stops Worth Making on the Way

  • Bandipur National Park

You’re driving through it anyway; slow down and pay attention. Deer, elephants, peacocks, and occasionally more. The forest road is properly beautiful, and your driver will know the best spots to pause.

  • Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary

Right after Bandipur on the Tamil Nadu side. Same forest energy, different state. If you want a proper jeep safari here, you’ll need to book in advance, but even the drive-through is worth it.

  • Kalhatty Ghat

36 hairpin bends between Gudalur and Ooty. Dramatic, winding, and the kind of road that makes passengers grip their seats and love every minute. The views over the Nilgiris from up here are something else entirely.

What to See in Ooty

Once you arrive, here’s what’s actually worth your time:

  • Ooty Botanical Gardens: Spread across 55 acres, maintained since 1848. Genuinely beautiful and not as crowded early in the morning.
  • Nilgiri Mountain Railway (Toy Train): a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Mettupalayam to Ooty section is the classic one. Book tickets in advance; they sell out.
  • Doddabetta Peak: Highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637 meters. Cloud cover is common; go early for clear views.
  • Ooty Lake: Good for an easy afternoon. Boating is available, and it’s a nice walk around the perimeter.
  • Pykara Lake and Falls: About 20 km from Ooty town. Quieter than the main spots, worth the short drive.

Best Time to Visit Ooty from Mysore

  • March to June: Peak season, pleasant weather, lots of tourists. Book accommodation and the toy train well in advance.
  • July to September: Monsoon. Ooty turns incredibly green, but some roads get slippery, and mist reduces visibility on the ghats.
  • October to February: Cool, quiet, and honestly the best time to visit. There are fewer crowds, and the weather is genuinely cold. Carry warm clothes.

A Few Tips Before You Go

  • Leave Mysore early: 6 to 7 AM gets you through Bandipur and Mudumalai in the morning when wildlife movement is highest and before the road gets busy.
  • Carry warm layers even if Mysore feels hot because Ooty at night is cold enough to need a jacket.
  • Book the toy train ticket online before you travel; walk-in availability is unpredictable.
  • Keep cash handy for Bandipur entry fees and roadside stops.
  • If you’re prone to carsickness, the Kalhatty Ghat section has 36 hairpin bends; take your medication before you start climbing.

FAQs

Q: Is the Bandipur forest route safe for a family with kids?

Completely safe; it’s a national highway passing through the forest, not an off-road track. The drive is smooth, and wildlife sightings from inside the car are part of the experience. Kids especially love it.

Q: Can we combine Mysore, Ooty, and Coorg in one trip?

Ooty and Coorg are in opposite directions from Mysore, so combining them as a straight route doesn’t really work logistically. It’s better to plan them as separate trips; each deserves at least two days.

Q: Is there a direct bus from Mysore to Ooty?

TNSTC and KSRTC run buses on this route, but the journey time is significantly longer, around 5 to 6 hours with stops, and you lose the flexibility to stop at Bandipur or Mudumalai properly. Most families and groups find a private cab worth the difference.

Q: Do we need any permits to drive through Bandipur and Mudumalai?

No special permit is needed to drive through on the highway. If you want to do a safari inside either sanctuary, that requires separate booking. Your driver will have all the standard entry documentation sorted.

Q: What’s the best vehicle for a group of 6 on this trip?

An SUV or Innova is comfortable for 6 people with luggage, handles the ghat roads well, and you won’t feel cramped on a 4-hour drive. Tempo traveler if your group is 8 or more.
